Mr. Thomas T. Smith is the Executive Officer, Installation Management Command, Central Region, Fort Sam Houston, Texas. As Executive Officer, he serves as key advisor to the Command Group regarding administration and coordination of Command Group operations in the region's active and reserve component US Army installations in 27 states from Ohio to the West Coast.
Mr. Smith's previous assignments include: Deputy Director, Installation Management Command, West Region; Garrison Commander, Fort Riley, Kansas; Head, Military History Department, United States Army Command and General Staff College and Director, Combat Studies Institute, Combined Arms Center, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas; Commander, Detachment 2, Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command, Hanoi, Vietnam; Garrison Commander, U.S. Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania; Counterdrug Operations Team Chief, Joint Task Force-Six, Fort Bliss, Texas; Brigade S4, 1st Brigade and S3, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas; Rifle Company Commander, 1st Battalion 41st Infantry, 2nd Armored Division at Fort Hood, Texas and Garlstedt, Germany.
A native of Texas, Mr. Smith earned a B.S. in Education from Southwest Texas State University, an MA in History from Texas A&M University, and an MA in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College. His military education includes Infantry Officer Basic and Advance Courses, Joint Staff Officers Course of the Armed Forces Staff College, United States Army Command and General Staff College, and the U.S. Army War College. Holding a secondary specialty as a military historian, Colonel Smith was an assistant professor of military history at the United States Military Academy at West Point, 1991-1994, has published numerous articles and six books on the U.S. Army and the nineteenth century frontier, and was elected a Fellow of the Texas State Historical Association in 2003.
Mr. Smith's awards include the Legion of Merit (2), Defense Meritorious Service Medal (2), Meritorious Service Medal (3), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Unit Cross with Palm; Vietnam Campaign Medal (4), Expert Infantry Badge, and Parachute Badge.
